Fri 19 January 2007 - That’s an excuse?
“A lot of people died in Iraq today, most of them kids. This is a very minor matter.” — Chris Murphy, Matthew Newton’s solicitor, to reporters.
Is this going to be known as the Matthew Newton Defence: claiming what you did wasn’t so bad because there’s worse things going on, unchecked, elsewhere in the world? That accusations of assault are somehow excusable because Iraq is a warzone?
What a piss-weak excuse. I hope he didn’t try that one with the judge.

Yeah, apparently bashing your girlfriend is excusable now. As long as you don’t use weapons of mass destruction.
How can someone get (well) paid to come out with tripe like that?
I won’t be encouraging my kids to be solicitors.

I was surprised when I read those comments. There is no excuse whatsoever for physical violence against your partner. If things are so bad that you feel the need for violence, then get out of the relationship and fast.

Chris Murphy is a seasoned ‘performer’….he should know better than to come out with crap like that.
Although, I probably have better things to worry about….like droughts of mass destruction.

And thus the war lowers the moral tenor of society as a whole.

Couldn’t agree more Daniel. A pretty pathetic and irrelevant comment by the lawyer.
Enjoy your blog a lot. Read it most days.
Cheers.

When I read that I was disgusted, it’s almost back to no means yes…
So you can commit a crime now as long as something worse happened somewhere, anywhere in the world??
