April Fools’ Day

Late yesterday (31/3) I was contacted by a major publisher, who propose adapting my diary into a book. They want to use all of it going back to 1994, and if all goes well plan to put it out in time for Fathers Day (September) in Australia and NZ, with a view to UK, USA and Canada for Christmas or early next year.

Obviously they are keen to protect possible revenue, and have asked that the diary be taken offline. I will discuss this with them in the next few days and hope to get at least some material back here, but in the meantime, I apologise for any inconvenience.

Happy April Fools’ Day. Bet it doesn’t fool anybody.

Still, thought it was better than claiming I’d been dooced or something.

Brilliant work Mr Bowen. Better than Triple M’s half-arsed Olympic-events-moved-to-Sydney-due-to-Athens-not-being-ready gag.

Congratulations and I hope it goes well, I can’t wait to buy a copy.

PS
Oh no, where can I go for my fix?!!!

Hey, I say congratulations, but knowing the day I reserve the right to take it back at anytime. April Fools anyone?

Taking the whole thing off line is overkill. You could take the archive off, but leave the current blog (ie last couple of months). You’re not in the business of publishing your diary for dough – that’s what you play with computers all day for – and shutting your blog down altogether is a big price to pay.

Daniel,
I have never met you before, but I read your diary almost every day with great pleasure!
Would this book deal have anything to do with the fact that it’s 1st April?
Please…bring back the diary of the average australian!

Good Luck with the book, I just feel really sad that I won’t get your daily dose of dry humour, and thoughful insight into human nature.
Thanks Daniel for a great website.
Astrid

Well Congrats… Looking foward to the book … interesting life .. Keep up the good work .. Cheers .. Katie

Yup, a fair few coming through. Strictly speaking, April Fools Day ends at midday, but it would be very Australian-east-coast-centric of me to shut it down now. I’ll leave it for a few more hours.

Those of you in Melbourne, check the Age for the Mini advert and an article about ABC TV going commercial. In the Herald-Sun there’s a Cherry Vegemite advert and a Toyota one, plus a piece claiming Howard plans a Taiwan-style assassination attempt to help with re-election. And in the Sydney Morning Herald there’s an article about L-plates for yum cha.

Google put a press release out about free e-mail (with a free gigabyte of storage!), which news.com and CNN have picked up.

I hate April Fool’s Day. I read everything in the paper with cynicism and same with the radio. There was an obvious one in today’s Green Guide and not read the rest of the paper yet. Red Symons had one this morning. If John Faine had one, I missed it and will probably think it was true. I got caught out badly once when ABC radio did one on the resignation of a cricketer, Sasha Tendulka?

Congratulations! Of course I’m sorry to see you go offline, especially as I had just started reading about your European trip. But it’s a great opportunity.
How does the NLA feel about it? Or how do they feel about the NLA?

Bugger. I mean… Yippee!
Still, have you approached any publishers? Living comfortably off royalties isn’t such a foolish idea.

Is this an April fool? Or is this for real? I’d definitely buy the book- I enjoy your day to day counts of life Daniel. Good on ya!

Hopefully the diary can return back online soon!
